Brittney Griner is once again making news in the WNBA but this time it is for all the right reasons. Phoenix Mercury has confirmed that they have signed Griner who was a free agent to a 12 month contract.
Griner Back In WNBA After Russian Jail Stint
Griner made headlines in Feb 2022 when she was arrested at an airport in Russia for carrying canisters of cannabis oil. She was arrested and detained for drug smuggling and eventually given a 9 year prison sentence which caused a huge outcry from American athletes who felt Russia was using her as a pawn in a political game against the United States.
The White House eventually secured her release in Dec 2022 when they made a prisoner swap and released arms dealer Viktor Blout. Griner came back to the United States and thanked President Joe Biden for her release but since then has remained relatively quiet on social media.
She took to Instagram this week to let her fans know that she was back with the Phoenix Suns and said it felt great to be back with the family. The Suns have also thrown their support behind Griner and said they would use all of their resources to support her in her professional and personal life.
