Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors seems to have declined his player option and will become an unrestricted free agent. Local media reports indicate that Rich Paul, CEO of Clutch Sports and Green’s agent, has stated this. If Green had exercised his option, he would have received $27.5 million next season.
Adrian Wojnarowski, a journalist from ESPN, shared Paul’s statement regarding Green’s option decline, saying, “We will continue to talk with the Golden State Warriors and consider all options.”
Mike Dunleavy Jr., the newly appointed GM of the Warriors, is optimistic about retaining Green. He commented, “I believe Steve (Kerr, HC) has also mentioned it, but we truly want Draymond to return. When we consider what his presence means to the organization and the team in our quest to win at the highest level, it is evident that he is indispensable to us.”
Owner Joe Lacob also reflected on Green, saying, “He has been a fantastic player for us. Without him, we would not have had the championships we’ve won. I think everyone here understands that. He holds great significance for this franchise. He may be a somewhat controversial player, and I understand that. However, what I want to say is that goodness outweighs the negatives.”
For the 33-year-old Green, this appears to be his last opportunity to secure a lucrative contract. While the Warriors are positive about retaining him, it remains to be seen what kind of offers Green will receive as an unrestricted free agent.
