The 2026 Olympic Games will take place in Italy and there are a number of stakeholders from different sports who are pushing for inclusion in the 2026 Olympics. The National Hockey League (NHL) has made it clear that it would like to be part of the 2026 Olympics.
NHL Must Come Up With Solutions
The NHL decided to skip the 2018 Olympic Games due to scheduling reasons and did not take part in the 2022 Olympics due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact that followed.
Bill Daly, NHL deputy commissioner has made it clear that the NHL is keen to be a part of the 2026 Olympics and said they were currently working things out with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Daly said one of the big points to clear was how do they get around 170 NHL players to fly private to Italy for the Olympics and then back home. Who would cover these costs and who would take responsibility for the deal?
Daly said in the past it was the IOC or IIHF that would absorb these costs and on-going discussions were to find out if that would remain the same or change.
