Hockey Canada and the breakaway British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) are at odds and Hockey Canada is using their power to send a strong message to the BCHL and its players. The BCHL is no longer governed by the rules and regulations of Hockey Canada.
Hockey Canada which is recognized by the government of Canada and oversees hockey in the country made a significant update to its non-sanctioned leagues policy this week.
Non-Sanctioned League Players Will Be Outcasts
Hockey Canada’s new non-sanctioned leagues policy comes into effect immediately and will no longer allow players from non-sanctioned leagues to be eligible for selection in the under-18 club championships in Canada. These non-sanctioned league players will also not be a part of the Canadian Junior Hockey League or Canadian Hockey League.
Hockey Canada has given players participating in these non-sanctioned leagues time till Sep 30 to separate themselves from un-sanctioned leagues and be considered for selection by Hockey Canada. This tough stance was taken by Hockey Canada after the BCHL separated from Hockey Canada and decided to launch its own league which is currently underway.
Hockey Canada announced in August a list of twenty benefits that sanctioned leagues and players could avail but the same would not be made available to unsanctioned leagues.
