The NCAA has allowed Division I schools to pay their athletes only with direct educational resources but all that could now change based on a new proposal put forward by NCAA president Charlie Baker.
The new proposal has been sent across to Division I schools who have been asked to review the same and then decide if they want to move forward. The new proposal will create a sub-division amongst Division I schools who will then be allowed to pool in millions of dollars each year into a trust fund which will then be used to pay their athletes.
This new policy will allow Division I schools to sign NIL deals with their student athletes and allow them to formulate their own policies concerning recruitment, transfers, team size and other key policy changes. They will also be able to sign name, image and likeness contracts with their athletes under the new policy.
NCAA major policy changes usually take over a year for it to be implemented. Division I schools haven’t been given any timeframe for reviewing and confirming on whether they want to proceed with the new policy.
