The Houston Rockets mourn the loss of a beloved figure in the basketball world, Carroll Dawson, who passed away at the age of 86. Affectionately known as “CD,” Dawson was an integral part of the Rockets organization for nearly three decades, serving as both an assistant coach and general manager. Dawson began his journey with the Rockets in 1980 as an assistant coach, a role he held until 1997. In 1997, Dawson transitioned to the role of general manager, where his vision and talent for scouting continued to shape the future of the Rockets. He was instrumental in bringing some of the NBA’s biggest names to Houston, including Charles Barkley, Steve Francis, Yao Ming, and Tracy McGrady. Simultaneously, he served as GM of the WNBA’s Houston Comets, assembling the team that would go on to win four WNBA championships.
Despite his achievements in the front office, it was Carroll Dawson’s character that truly defined him. Known for his kind-hearted nature and infectious humor, he was a beloved figure not just in Houston but across the basketball world.
A Lasting Legacy
Dawson’s influence extended beyond Houston. A proud Texas native and former Baylor University basketball player and coach, he helped break barriers in Waco by bringing in the university’s first Black scholarship athlete, Tommy Bowman. While his head coaching career at Baylor from 1973-77 was brief, his impact was significant, both on and off the court.
Dawson’s contribution to the sport of basketball was immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be honored with his initials hanging in the rafters of the Toyota Center. His longtime friendship with former Rockets head coach Rudy Tomjanovich was well-known, with Tomjanovich stating that much of the Rockets’ success wouldn’t have been possible without Dawson’s guidance and support.
