Speculation Mounts as Real Madrid Targets Another High-Profile Free Transfer
Alexander-Arnold’s Future at Liverpool in Doubt
Reports from Spain suggest that Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has reached a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid. According to Marca, the 26-year-old England international is poised to make the move to the Bernabeu, with only the timing of the transfer—January or the summer—yet to be finalised.
Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, leaving him free to negotiate with overseas clubs for a free transfer in the summer. Liverpool is in ongoing discussions with Alexander-Arnold, as well as teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, but no breakthroughs have been reported.
Real Madrid Eyes January Deal
Real Madrid, led by Carlo Ancelotti, is reportedly eager to bring Alexander-Arnold to the team this January. Despite having a £20 million bid rejected earlier in the window, the Spanish giants remain determined to secure the right-back’s services. If Liverpool refuses a mid-season transfer, Real Madrid can wait until the summer, when Alexander-Arnold’s contract allows him to leave Anfield without a transfer fee.
Alexander-Arnold has kept quiet about his future, stating in September, “I want to be a Liverpool player this season, at a minimum.” The defender added that he prefers to keep contract negotiations private, a practice he has followed throughout his 20-year association with the club.
Real Madrid’s Free Transfer Strategy
The potential signing of Alexander-Arnold aligns with Real Madrid’s recent strategy of securing top talent on free transfers. Notable examples include David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger, and Kylian Mbappé. In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid is reportedly pursuing Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, whose contract also expires at the end of the season.
Davies, a Canadian international, joined Bayern Munich in 2018 and has made 218 appearances, winning the Champions League, five Bundesliga titles, and several other honours. With contract negotiations at Bayern stalled, Davies could become another marquee signing for Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Liverpool Focuses on Premier League Title
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Alexander-Arnold remains focused on his current role at Liverpool. He played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest. Liverpool, sitting four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, will face Brentford on Saturday as they continue their title campaign.
As Real Madrid contemplates its transfer timeline, the football world waits to see if Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool mid-season or close out his storied career at Anfield on a high note.
