Australia had a terrible start to defending their T20 World Cup at home when they suffered an embarrassing defeat to New Zealand. Aussie fans were disappointed not just because the Aussies lost but because of the margin of defeat as the Kiwis won by 89 runs.
Australia Bounce Back Against Sri Lanka
The Aussies copped a lot of flak in the media for their performance against New Zealand and were under a lot of pressure in their second game against Sri Lanka in Perth on Oct 25. Sri Lanka batted first and the Aussie bowlers did well to restrict Sri Lanka to a modest total of 157 for 6.
Australia once again stumbled with the bat as they lost the key wickets of David Warner, Mitch Marsh and Glen Maxwell just as they got set. However, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis came to the crease and played a magnificent innings scoring 59 of just 18 balls to take Australia to victory in the 17th over.
Australia will take a lot of confidence from this victory as their net run rate would have also improved. Their next challenge will be a stiff test as they face England on Oct 28 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
