Jeanette Zacarias Zapata stepped into the boxing ring on Aug 28, 2021 at the IGA Stadium in Montreal not knowing that it would result in her death. The 18 year old was knocked unconscious during her fight and was rushed to the emergency unit by paramedics. She passed away 5 days later on Sep 2, 2021.
Coroner’s Report Says SIS Potential Cause Of Death
Quebec carried out a detailed investigation into her death and the coroner’s report was released only on Nov 28. The report cited Jeanette Zacarias Zapata previous fight in Mexico which took place 15 weeks prior to the Quebec fight. During that fight, the young 18 year old took a lot of blows to the head and eventually had the fight stopped after she fell to one knee.
The coroner’s report cited Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) which is when a person incurs a second injury to the head without recovering from the first injury fully. The swelling in her brain and the speed in which is happened suggested that SIS was the likely cause.
Fight promoters and gaming regulators are now being urged to get detailed reports from fighters who have suffered a KO loss in their previous fight.
