Canada made history when it qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a 36 year period and a lot of the credit was given to then head coach John Herdman who is from England.
Canada ended up playing poorly in Qatar and lost all their qualifiers but Herdman retained his job as Canada Soccer was pleased with what he had done with the team. However in August 2023, Herdman stepped down and took up a role with Toronto FC.
Herdman Shares Thoughts On Podcast
Herdman recently sat down with Anastasia Bucsis who hosts the Player’s Own Voice podcast. Herdman said that he went from being on an emotional high after Canada qualified for the World Cup to an extremely low point in his life on learning that his sister committed suicide in May 2022.
Herdman said that once Canada qualified for the World Cup, he knew in his gut that his work was over and he wasn’t the right person to lead Canada in Qatar but he ignored that feeling and it was a mistake in hindsight. Herdman said stepping down as head coach was the right decision as he was happy with his new role at Toronto FC.
