Saudi Arabia and Australia were the two main countries bidding to get the hosting rights from FIFA for the 2034 World Cup. Australia has now confirmed that they will put out of the race to host the 2034 World Cup which unofficially gives it to Saudi Arabia.
FIFA has time till next year to confirm Saudi Arabia as the hosts for the 2034 World Cup. The announcement is seem as a mere formality as FIFA president Gianni Infantino has close ties to Saudi Crown Prince and is keen on having Saudi Arabia host big FIFA events.
Human Rights Activists Upset With FIFA/Saudi Arabia
Multiple Human Rights organizations have expressed their disappointment with FIFA for leaning towards Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been openly accused of sportwashing – using big sporting events to capture the focus of the world and distract them from the human rights abuses happening in Saudi Arabia.
Human Rights Watch was one of the organizations that said FIFA has shown that it does not really care about human rights since it is considering awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia despite knowing the terrible human rights abuse in the country.
