The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing growing pressure to reverse its decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international sporting events including the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The IOC announced earlier this year that Russian and Belarusian athletes would be allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympics under a neutral framework and would not be allowed to wear the Russian flag or uniform.
34 Countries Endorse Strong Letter To IOC
As many as 34 countries have joined forces and sent a strong letter to the IOC asking them to provide clarity on what they meant by a neutral framework. The letter conveys the intent that these 34 countries which include the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Germany want the IOC to reverse its decision and ban Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Slavic countries have gone a step further as Poland, Latvia and Denmark have threated to boycott the 2024 Olympics if the IOC does not reverse its decision and ban Russian and Belarusian athletes.
The push to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes comes as Russia continues to wage war on Ukraine. The IOC is yet to respond to the letter from these 34 countries but we can expect a respond soon as qualifications for the 2024 Olympics starts in a few weeks.
