It is the dream of every football head coach to lead a national side to the FIFA World Cup. John Herdman did amazing well as head coach for Canada’s men’s national team when he led the side to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Under his leadership, Canada qualify for the FIFA World Cup after a 36 year period. Canada Soccer, the governing body for football in Canada had Herdman under contract till the 2026 FIFA World Cup which Canada will co-host along with Mexico and the United States.
Herdman Resigns And Joins Toronto FC
John Herdman put in his resignation and walked away from his role as head coach, surprising Canadian football fans who expected him to lead the national team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Herdman decided to take up a new role with Toronto FC and will start on Oct 1.
The decision to walk away from a national head coach role and take up a role with a team that has lost their last 10 games on the trot is an interesting one and leads to speculation that Herdman was tired and frustrated of the on-going battle between Canada Soccer and the women’s and men’s national team over a variety of different issues including funding and remuneration.
