South Africa faced the Netherlands on 17 Oct in Dharamsala and were heavy betting favourites given the fact that they just beat 5 time World Cup champions and handed them their biggest loss in World Cup history.
Beating cricketing minnows the Netherlands wasn’t supposed to be a challenge but it ended up being just that as South Africa stumbled and suffered an embarrassing defeat. The Proteas ended up losing to the Netherlands by 38 runs in what is the biggest upset at the ICC World Cup so far.
This is the second biggest upset in the on-going ICC World Cup in India with Afghanistan causing the first huge upset when they beat defending champions England last week.
Netherlands Captain Leads From The Front
The Netherlands batted first and were struggling to put up a decent score until captain Scott Edwards played a captain’s knock scoring 78 from 69 balls. The Netherlands made 245/8 in a rain curtailed 43 overs match and South Africa should have chased that down comfortably.
However their batting collapsed as the Netherlands picked up wickets at regular intervals and bowled them out in 42.5 overs. South African captain Temba Bavuma said this loss is going to hurt them bad as they dropped the ball and let the Netherlands win!
