Jorge Vilda, led Spain’s women’s national team to the 2023 FIFA World Cup championship and in doing so head his contract extended for 4 more years. Vilda also got a salary increase as his contract went up from EUR 160,000 to EUR 500,000.
Vilda Gets Contract Terminated
Just a few weeks after leading Spain’s women’s team to their first World Cup win, the Spanish football federation decided to terminate head coach Vilda’s contract and offered no explanation to the public. Vilda will now be replaced by assistant coach Montse Tomé.
Vilda stirred up controversy before the World Cup could commence as multiple players in Spain’s women’s team complained that he was too controlling, micromanaged them and was causing them mental health issues.
Spain’s football federation president Luis Rubiales backed Vilda and ensured that he kept his job. When Rubiales was criticised for kissing Jenni Hermoso on her lips after Spain won the World Cup, pressure was put on Rubiales to resign but the President refused to resign. Vilda supported Rubiales and his decision not to resign but soon after said he Rubiales was wrong for kissing Hermoso.
It appears that Spain’s football federation does not want both Rubiales or Vilda to have anything more to do with women’s football in Spain.
