Newcomers Solanke and Maddison shine in second-half comeback
Postecoglou Unfazed by Premier League Standings
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that he’s not keeping an eye on the Premier League table just yet, despite his side’s impressive 4-1 comeback victory over Aston Villa. Following the win, which propelled Spurs to seventh place, Postecoglou stressed his focus on maintaining consistent performances throughout the season rather than early league standings.
“I don’t like looking either side of me. The table is only important at the end of the year,” Postecoglou told reporters. “While we’re in the race, I’m focused on getting us to the finish line.”
Aston Villa’s Lead Short-Lived as Spurs Find Their Groove
Aston Villa initially took control of the game, with Morgan Rogers capitalizing on a set-piece play to score from close range, exploiting Tottenham’s ongoing struggles with defending corners. Lucas Digne’s delivery into the box caught Spurs off guard, allowing Rogers to give Villa the lead in the first half.
However, Postecoglou’s side responded decisively after halftime. Brennan Johnson’s tap-in from a Son Heung-min cross evened the score, setting the stage for a dominant second half.
Solanke’s Brilliance and Maddison’s Magic Turn the Tide
New signing Dominic Solanke was instrumental in Tottenham’s second-half resurgence, scoring twice in quick succession. His first goal showcased a flowing one-touch team move, with a neat assist from Dejan Kulusevski that Solanke calmly chipped over Villa’s Emiliano Martinez. Minutes later, Villa’s Pau Torres misjudged a clearance, setting up substitute Richarlison to feed Solanke for his second goal.
Postecoglou praised Solanke’s debut, saying, “His work rate and contributions have been unbelievable. He’s exactly what we needed up front.”
James Maddison added the final touch to Tottenham’s commanding performance, curling a free kick around the Villa wall in stoppage time to secure the win. His precise strike over Martinez was the exclamation point on a game Spurs dominated by the end.
Set-Piece Frustrations and the ‘Long Game’ Ahead
Though Tottenham displayed resilience in the second half, Postecoglou addressed the team’s vulnerability in defending set pieces. “Conceding from set plays is frustrating. It’s part of the game now, but it still feels like a rugby scrum to me,” he said, lamenting the crowded play style. Nonetheless, Spurs effectively managed Villa’s set-piece threats after the early setback, highlighting their overall growth in defending.
The victory was a welcome recovery from Tottenham’s recent loss to Crystal Palace and an energizing follow-up to their midweek League Cup win over Manchester City. Yet, Postecoglou remains level-headed, stating, “You don’t fall off cliffs and you don’t climb mountains within a week. I’m totally focused on the long game here.”
Villa’s Disappointment but Long-Term Optimism
Villa’s Unai Emery acknowledged his disappointment with the defeat, which ended the team’s seven-match unbeaten run. However, Emery remains optimistic, recognizing the ups and downs of the tightly contested league.
“We’re disappointed, frustrated, but we know our way,” Emery said. “It’s a 38-game season, and the league is very tight.”
The victory for Spurs not only halted Villa’s momentum but also underscored Tottenham’s aspirations to stay competitive in the Premier League, even as Postecoglou keeps his sights set firmly on the endgame.
