Danushka Gunathilaka entered Australia as part of the T20 World Cup squad but did not leave Australia with the team. The 31 year old was arrested at the team’s hotel in Sydney and charged with four counts of having sexual intercourse without consent.
Gunathilaka’s Reputation Could Get Him In Trouble
Gunathilaka denied the charges and filed an appeal for bail but the appeal was refused by the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney. The authorities have not released the name of the woman who was raped by Gunathilaka but confirmed that the two met on the popular dating app Tinder.
Gunathilaka played the first match of the T20 World Cup for Sri Lanka but was sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury. He is alleged to have met his tinder date at a restaurant and then went to her house where the alleged rape took place.
Gunathilaka has faced numerous disciplinary proceedings by the Sri Lankan Cricket board in the past for his bad behaviour. He was suspended in 2018 after the Sri Lankan police carried out an investigation where one of his friends was alleged to have raped a Norwegian woman in Colombo. Gunathilaka was cleared of all charges in Sri Lanka and must now wait and see if he gets cleared in Australia or jailed!
